Why Texting and Driving Should Be Banned

# of Words: 153

Obama has declared war on driving while using mobile phones! Driver distraction based accidents are becoming an epidemic. In the last calendar year, more than half a million people were hurt and 6, 000 were killed due to driver distraction. This consists of talking on cell phones and texting. Many states have passed legislation making it illegal to text when driving, while only seven states have banned driving while speaking on a mobile phone with no hands-free apparatus.

California is one of the states and I see people talking on their phones all the time. Texting isn't as easy to see, but I am sure a lot of that is going on as well.

Should the federal government or the individual states be responsible for passing and implementing the ban on mobile phone driving? Do we need substantial government control? Will it be successful without severe abuse? What do you think? More cell phone legislation? .
