The Importance of Racism in Today's Society

# of Words: 551

Affirmative Action as we know that it has served its purpose; without revision it will overtake the racism and oppression that it was designed to ruin. The initial purpose of Affirmative Action is to give consideration for qualified, under-represented minorities and women in education, employment and awarding contracts to compensate for both historical and institutional racism, discrimination and oppression by white men.

Despite the fact that the face value of this coverage appears to give women and minorities a long overdue short cut in the line of chances on the journey to their dreams; it is really an illusion of fairness that compels them to forget and overlook who owns the amusement park in the first place.

Affirmative Action should not concentrate on giving under- represented populations short-cuts to the front part of the line--but provide them with the psychological and educational tools that will allow them to design their own rides and construct their own amusement park. The existing Affirmative Action policy is hierarchical in nature because it indicates that all white men are powerful, wealthy racists who oppress women and minorities. And even if they do not personally have these traits, a few white male in their own family lineage did or will have these traits in the future that they have to be punished by exclusion.

This coverage assumes that because he's a white male, he's automatically financially superior and intellectually to minorities and women. Additionally, everything that he desires will easily come to him without hard work, fight and sacrifice because other white men in dominate positions wait to fulfill his every want. This could be true for a small percentage of white men, however I believe that the vast majority of people regardless of race or sex have worked really hard to achieve their goals and dreams. The trick to white male victory isn't that someone gave them the answers to the bar or college entry exams, but that they share the identical work ethic, individuality and degree of self-esteem as the folks who wrote the exams.4.

There isn't any such thing as a white person. All individuals own culture, traditions, and heritages. How do you honor the gaps in someone else when you can't see and respect the special differences and beauty within yourself? .5. History should be taught objectively and truthfully so individuals will understand that being a victim or a hero isn't related to skin color, but integrity and dignity. African Americans should be educated that one of the reasons that the slave trade in America was so successful was because most (not all) African leaders caught and marketed their own people into captivity.

Europeans weren't familiar with the continent and would not have been as effective without the cooperation of Africans. White folks will need to know that there have been lots of white people who fought against slavery and lost everything including their lives and families because they believed that slavery was bad. Not all by any means, however it's documented that most Americans were successful paid slave catchers because they were familiar with the territory. Learning that all cultural groups are capable of choosing to do what is right or wrong, will teach people that it's not their skin color that determines their success in life, but the decisions they make.

Racism Exposed in Fences, by August Wilson

The grim music of "Fences" contrasts with a ferocious beauty in Denzel Washington's long-in-coming adaptation of August Wilson's masterpiece of African-American success and sorrow. What we have, instead, is a meat-and-potatoes drama, delivered with full-bodied, powerhouse performances along with an attuned ear to the bebop......Read More
