An Argument in Favor of School Uniforms in Public Schools
# of Words: 568
There is an ongoing discussion in this nation about school uniforms, whether or
not they help with behavior difficulties, and increase test scores. As an eighth
grade student at Delta Middle School, I do not want school uniforms. In this
paper I will present the argument. I shall include, personal opinion and can
site research.
Kade A., a sixth grade student, when asked about school uniforms said, "No, I don't like them, because they are uneasy, and also make you really feel as though you are in your church clothes all the time." Daycen J., another student said, "I don't like school uniforms because they take away student's identity." "Clothes are a supply of expression for children, and as children get older, they become increasingly leery of uniforms. By instituting a uniform policy, colleges are taking away children identity colleges will need to determine if that sacrifice is worth making." Dr.
Hilfer is speaking about whether taking away student's identity would be worth the payoff of decreased behavior issues, and increased test scores. A study done by David L. Brunsma, University of Alabama and Kerry A. Rockquemore of Notre Dame, entitled Effects of Student Uniforms on Attendance, Behavior Problems, Substance Abuse, and Academic Achievement, showed that uniforms didn't lead to an improvement in these areas. "Student uniform usage was not significantly correlated with any of the school devotion variables such as absenteeism, behavior, or chemical usage.
In addition, pupils wearing uniforms did not appear to possess any significantly different academic preparation, proschool attitudesor even peer group structures with proschool attitudes than other pupils." One area that might be of concern is the lessening of gang related troubles, and fashion wars. An analysis published in 1995, by Lillian O. Holloman, a clothing and fabrics professor at Virginia Polytechic Institute and State University, qualified Research and Other Antisocial Behaviors Could Dress Codes Help Solve the Problem? Explores the issues the students can get into because of the way they dress. The research says: "Gang colours and insignias, whether worn intentionally or unintentionally, can get a pupil worse or jumped.
Status clothes, such as group coats of professional sports teams, leather coats and designer sneakers, have contributed to thefts, sometimes by knife or even at gunpoint." This might be true in some areas of the nation, such as low carb, inner urban areas, but I do not believe this to be accurate from the Millard County School District. I cannot remember any accounts of violence against pupils brought on by a student's clothing selection. I believe that before you put into action a school uniform policy based on these anxieties, you have to take into account the area the school is currently in, the economic level of the population, the number of people involved with gangs and the amount of gang related activity in the area.
Most of the articles that I have read about whether wearing school uniforms varies behavior and increases test scores, are inconclusive. Most of the time other rules are put into position along with the school uniforms, which may lead to some desirable behavior. The uniform itself can't be entirely responsible for the change. Middle School/ Junior High is a time of aging, physically, emotionally, academically, and emotionally. Schools will need to create an environment that promotes pupils and motivate to battle themselves and inspire self confidence. I think that school uniforms reduce imagination and self expression.

There will always be an argument for and against school uniforms. However, if toddlers rob kids of their identity and waste much staff time in enforcing the prescribed dress codes, I'm in favor of school uniforms for four main reasons.1.
